The ocean plays a vital role in Earth’s systems, supporting life itself. Yet, the ocean is often overlooked in discussions about how to protect the places that people depend on, and the public does not understand or appreciate its interconnected relationship with Earth’s air and land.
The FrameWorks Institute, with support from the UK Branch of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, is working to develop ways to better communicate the value of the ocean. By using social science to help translate ocean science, this research will yield effective ways to build a more accurate public understanding of the ocean, its importance, why and how it is changing, and what society can do to respond to its multiple challenges.
Getting Below the Surface: Mapping the Gaps between Expert and Public Understandings of the Ocean and Marine Conservation in the United Kingdom (2017). This study explores expert and the UK public views of the ocean and marine conservation and “maps the gaps” between them. It includes strategic communications recommendations that environmental advocates can use to reframe ocean issues.
