About the Role

The FrameWorks Institute seeks a highly strategic, detail-oriented communications professional to lead our digital communications efforts across email, website, and digital publishing.

This role sits at the intersection of communications strategy and execution. The Head of Digital Communications will manage FrameWorks’ publishing and distribution of research and ideas across digital channels—from planning editorial calendars and coordinating product launches to managing our website, email program, and digital analytics. Note that this position is not responsible for social media but will collaborate with other comms team members to ensure all strategies are aligned. The ideal candidate is motivated, nimble, and strategic, with strong project management skills and a deep understanding of digital communications best practices.

This position reports to the Senior Director of Communications and works closely with the rest of the communications team along with program teams across the organization.

Essential Job Functions

Website & Digital Publishing

  • Serve as the primary owner of FrameWorks’ website as a dynamic and compelling communications platform.
  • Publish reports, toolkits, blogs, and other digital resources.
  • Build and maintain resource landing pages.
  • Ensure website content remains accurate, current, and easy to navigate.
  • Optimize digital presentation of research products.
  • Monitor website analytics and user behavior.
  • Recommend improvements to site structure, user experience, and content organization.
  • Lead efforts to increase the reach and discoverability of FrameWorks’ digital content through SEO, search analytics, and ongoing content optimization.
  • Continuously improve the user experience by optimizing site navigation, user journeys, and pathways to key actions such as resource downloads, newsletter signups, and event registrations.
  • Coordinate with external web developers and designers on enhancements and maintenance.
  • Ensure branded web content meets accessibility best practices (plain language, readability, ADA considerations).

Email Communications

  • Manage FrameWorks’ email communications program, leading execution and partnering with the Senior Director of Communications on strategy.
  • Develop email strategy and distribution plans for research releases, events, and organizational communications.
  • Optimize digital user journeys to increase engagement with FrameWorks’ research and programs, including newsletter subscriptions, event registrations, resource downloads, and other priority actions.
  • Coordinate timing across teams to avoid audience fatigue and maximize impact.
  • Draft email copy and manage internal review and approval processes.
  • Build emails within Mailchimp; manage audience segmentation and mailing lists.
  • Analyze email performance and recommend improvements.
  • Coordinate with contractors supporting event promotion, product design, earned media, and other campaign needs.
  • Ensure branded email content meets accessibility best practices (plain language, readability, ADA considerations).

Digital Communications Strategy

  • Partner with the Senior Director of Communications and other members of the communications team to plan and coordinate organizational communications.
  • Manage the organization’s editorial calendar, working collaboratively with the Senior Director of Communications.
  • Coordinate communications timelines across multiple program areas.
  • Recommend appropriate communications tactics and channels for major initiatives.
  • Ensure consistent execution across digital communications.
  • Identify opportunities to improve communications workflows and processes.
  • Identify avenues for repurposing and/or uplifting older but currently relevant research.
  • Identify opportunities and needs for rapid-response content and execute development, e.g., events, emails, guidance, public statements.
  • Develop and track key digital communications metrics; analyze performance across channels and use data and audience insights to inform strategy and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of FrameWorks’ organizational external communications strategy.

Collaboration

  • Act as a strategic thought partner to the Senior Director of Communications, translating organizational priorities into executable content plans.
  • Work closely with researchers, program staff, and communications colleagues to translate complex research into accessible digital content.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with social media manager to ensure synergy between digital platforms.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors.
  • Support organization-wide communications planning and campaign execution.

Other Duties

  • Attend staff, departmental, and other required meetings and trainings.
  • Occasional domestic travel may be required for organizational meetings, conferences, or events.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Experience, and Education

  • 6-10 years of work and/or academic experience in nonprofit or public sector communications, digital communications, digital marketing, journalism, public affairs, or a related field.
  • Experience managing organizational websites using a CMS.
  • Experience managing email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, HubSpot, or similar).
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, ideally with experience using Asana or a similar platform.
  • Familiarity with SEO and digital content best practices.
  • Experience interpreting website and email analytics and using data to improve performance based on organizational goals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with both communications and non-communications colleagues.
  • Ability to take initiative, identify problems before they become obstacles, and develop practical solutions.
  • Comfort working independently while also seeking and incorporating feedback.
  • Interest in or familiarity with social issues, public-interest communications, social science, advocacy, or narrative change.
  • Commitment to FrameWorks’ mission and values.
  • Experience promoting and/or translating social science research a plus.

Computer and Equipment Skills

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Calendar).
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) for website publishing.
  • Proficiency with email marketing platforms, particularly Mailchimp.
  • Familiarity with SEO tools and website analytics (e.g., Google Analytics).
  • Experience with project management platforms such as Asana.
  • Comfort with collaboration tools including Slack and Zoom.
  • Interest in and openness to emerging digital tools and AI, within the bounds of FrameWorks’ AI policy.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work Environment: The employee is expected to maintain a dedicated, home workspace with reliable internet connectivity. Regular collaboration will occur via video conferencing, chat, and other digital communication tools. The role may require occasional virtual meetings across multiple time zones. While the position offers flexibility, standard core working hours 9am – 5pm ET are generally expected for availability and team coordination.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for extended periods.
    • Must be able to communicate clearly via video, phone, and written correspondence.
    • Occasional lifting of light objects (up to 10 lbs.), such as laptops or office supplies.
